I know about Mirny such facts. In July, 1955, on the left bank of the River Irjelyakh, the Amakinsky geological expedition discovered rich deposits of diamonds. They put up tents, built wooden houses and named the camp Mirny. By the end of 1956, about 700 people were living in Mirny. The first streets had names like Expedition Street and Uphill (Nagornaya) Street. In April 1959, Mirny was still very like a geological camp, with 6,000 inhabitants but it was given the status of a town. Nowadays, it is a modern industrial city with a population of 86,600 people. It is called the diamond capital of the republic, because it was built around ALROSA Co., Ltd., the largest mining company in the Russian Federation and one of the leading producers of raw diamonds in the world. The town hosts the diamond sorting center, where the diamonds from all the mining plants are sent. Here they are weighed, sorted according to class, evaluated and studied. It also hosts the scientific research institute, Yakutniiproalmaz, which develops new technologies for mining and other technical projects.
I can add that Mirny is a town that has grown upwards, with nine-storey apartment blocks in the city centre, surrounded by green trees and brightly-coloured flowers in summer and shimmering ice-sculptures in winter. This is a favourite place, where the citizens – children and adults – like to come during holidays and weekends. The city now has thirty secondary schools, a business lyceum, three technical colleges, the Mirny Polytechnical Institute and a branch of the Sakha State University. Mirny has a vibrant cultural life. One can enjoy poetry at the local literary club, Kimberlite, or a ballet performance from the children’s ballet studio Almazy Yakutyi (Diamonds of Yakutia), a chamber choir Severnye Golosa (Northern Voices), the folk dance ensemble Kustuk, the folklore ensemble Razdolye, and so on. One can visit exhibitions of painting and applied arts by local artists. There are well-equipped facilities for sports – tennis courts, swimming pools, covered football and hockey grounds so that teams can train all year round, especially during winter when the temperature falls below -40 C. Mini football, which is called footzal players are members of the national team of the Russian Federation. In spring 2007, Mirny with Yakutsk and Neryungry hosted the footzal World Cup.
